Program Overview – Walk-In Counselling, Community Care

The Walk-in Counselling Program is an innovative mental health resource that provides immediate, free access to high-quality clinical counselling to a diverse client population. This Program offers an immediate, free counselling session to adults, couples, families, and youth on a walk-in basis, serving clients at their chosen time of need.  The counselling service addresses a multitude of emotional/behavioural/social concerns, many serious and acute, with no restrictions based on age or catchment area.

 

What You Will Do

  • Coordinate Walk-In Counseling program and provide operational and clinical oversight to staff, volunteers, and placement students in the program whilst ensuring quality assurance on the nights when the service operates.
  • Develop and/or update operational manuals and protocols for the Program to ensure compliance with organizational, funder-specific, and accreditation standards and requirements.
  • Coordinate scheduling of staff and volunteers to ensure sufficient coverage for the Program.
  • Ensure the effective utilization, training, and support of volunteers and students throughout the various programming activities, including liaising with colleges, universities, community agencies, private practice practitioners, and hospitals.
  • Work with Volunteer Services to recruit and train, implement recognition activities for volunteers for the program as well as enhance the volunteer base.
  • Implement ongoing promotion/awareness building of Walk-In Counseling program and related WoodGreen programs with the immediate and broader community in conjunction with WoodGreen’s Communications department.
  • Create and maintain virtual client files as per WoodGreen policies and procedures.
  • Identify and implement mechanisms for community and client input to support organizational quality improvement measures and foster ongoing enhancement of the Walk-In Counseling program, ex: WIC Advisory Council, newsletter, quarterly reports.
  • Support the development of funding proposals, as required and ensure organizational, funder-specific, and accreditation standards and targets are met.
  • Complete statistical reports and submissions and maintain all records and forms regarding visits and program/activity enrollment, using a client information database in a timely manner.
  • In conjunction with the Manager and Unit Director, prepare and monitor program financial information, develop and oversee Walk-In Counseling budget and ensure adherence to it.
  • Initiate, develop and facilitate implementation of the evaluation framework for the walk-in counseling program in collaboration with Manager and Unit Director.
  • In conjunction with Manager and Unit Director support program development and evaluation activities to plans and implement new services and initiatives that build on and enhance the objectives of the program.
  • Facilitate team consultations – providing clinical supervision and guidance on an individual and group basis and promote peer supervision for quality client care.
  • Provide ongoing orientation and supervise program staff and volunteers; in collaboration with Manager conduct ongoing and annual performance appraisals in accordance with organizational policies and protocols.
  • Provide direction and support, ongoing mentorship, training and support to staff, volunteers, and placement students in the program and engage in team building and debriefing of crises incidents; implement and monitor clinical supervision supports.
  • Respond effectively and professionally to clients, situations, and emergencies whilst ensuring compliance with organizational policies, Collective Bargaining Agreement, and legislative requirements.
  • Engage in training and education to upgrade skills as directly by WoodGreen Community Services to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
  • Work flexible hours based on the needs of the program and keep current about the range of services available within the organization and in other agencies.
  • Take part in team, unit, and management meetings for the purposes of ensuring a coordinated and integrative programming, and resource sharing.
  • Ensure that the equity objectives and community development policies of the organization are achieved within the program.
  • Familiar with organization policies and procedures and the site-specific emergency procedures.
  • Represent the unit on internal staff committees, inter-agency initiatives as directed.

What You Bring to the Team

  • M.S.W or Graduate degree in Psychology or graduate degree in related Field.
  • Registration in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, or an equivalent.
  • 5+ years of clinical experience in mental health and/or addictions and a proven ability to develop effective services for individuals and communities facing these challenges.
  • 2+ years progressive management experience, preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Solid knowledge and skills in the provision of psychotherapeutic counseling with individuals, couples, youth and families.
  • Effective September 7, 2021, all newly hired employees will be required to provide proof that they have completed an approved course of vaccination against COVID-19 at least 14 days prior to commencing employment or provide documentation to support an exemption based on grounds covered by the Ontario Human Rights Act (i.e. Medical exemption).

  • Strong conflict resolution, negotiation, crisis prevention/intervention, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Excellent time management, verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity to changing situations and needs.
  • Strong computer proficiency and familiarity with client data management systems.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team and fostering a supportive/dynamic culture.
  • Second language is a strong asset.
  • Must be capable of fulfilling the physical and psychological demands as detailed in the PDA.
