Child, Youth & Family Coordinator

Gilda’s Club Simcoe Muskoka (GCSM) is a welcoming, non-residential cancer support community that exists so that no one faces cancer aloneTM. Position Overview

 

The Child, Youth & Family Coordinator, in reporting to the Program Director, is responsible for the coordination and management of Gilda’s Club Simcoe Muskoka (Gilda’s Club) Child, Youth and Family Program, and its related day-to-day operations. The successful candidate will participate in the ongoing efforts to increase awareness, understanding and execution of a Program consistent with and supportive of Gilda’s Club mission, vision and philosophy.

  

Primary Responsibilities

 

  • In conjunction with the Program Director,  ensure that the diverse, high quality Child, Youth and Family Programs offered are congruent with established mission, philosophy, policies and guidelines of Gilda’s Club (Cancer Support Community).
  • The Child, Youth & Family Coordinator is responsible for planning, overseeing/facilitating, and evaluating the socialy-based group activities and individual, specialized, age-appropriate psychosocial support sessions (currently referred to as Child Life Sessions) provided to children, youth, parents/guardians and families who are impacted by cancer.
  • Exercise discretion and sound judgement in conducting  and responding to membership inquiries, completing Customized Membership Plans, facilitating Support and Networking Groups, and family conferences as required; and in interactions with Members, whether they be a youth or an adult, who may be in crisis.
  • In collaboration with the Program Director and Volunteer Coordinator, assist in the training of and support the role of volunteers within the Gilda’s Club community, specifically within Child, Youth and Family activities and related outreach opportunities.
  • In conjunction with the Program Director, assist in the development, production and distribution of Gilda’s Club Program Calendar, with specific focus on Child, Youth and Family events.
  • Must be flexible in their work hours as a part of their role in supporting the needs of the children, youth and families/caregivers who are current and prospective members, specifically in making program accessible to them.  The planning and running of the Child, Youth and Family programs will require work outside of the standard work hours, specifically evenings and weekends.
  • Actively participate in ongoing outreach to the community to bring awareness to and build supportive partnerships with Gilda’s Club Simcoe Muskoka and its Program, with specific focus on outreach aimed at potential Child, Youth and Family Members.

 

Additional Roles

 

  • Be open and willing to support with the day to day opperations of Gilda’s Club Simcoe Muskoka such as answering the phone, answering the door, greeting guests and members in the Clubhouse, supporting Members with checking in and opening and closing the Clubhouse for programs and events, as well as providing support for these events. 
  • Support the Program Director and Program Coordinator, when it does not take away from important activities or duties related to the Child, Youth and Family program, with different activities related to Gilda’s Club Adult Program and Members, such as: conducting Customized Membership Plans; taking and returning calls; supporting members in crisis; and contacting facilitators and volunteers regarding Gilda’s Club Programs.

 

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Fully vaccinated status to enable working with members who are immune-compromised individuals undergoing cancer treatment.
  • Candidates with a Certification as a Child Life Specialist are a priority; however we will consider candidates with a Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, or a related mental health field, from an accredited university, with a strong background in providing psychosocial supports to parents, children and families.
  • Registered and in good standing with professional college and/or professional association is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience preferably working in the charitable sector in the delivery of services.
  • Group facilitation and/or counselling experience is required. 
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office software applications including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Experience working with parents, children, families and adults under stress is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with and supervising facilitators/instructors and volunteers is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity in working with adults/parents and or children/teens in the area of oncology, and grief/loss would be an asset.
  • Availability to work a modified schedule into evening hours and some weekends as the program schedule dictates.
  • Knowledge of the local community and cancer support services is preferred. 
  • The successful applicant will need to undergo and pass a Vulnerable Sector Screening police check.
