The Infant Mental Health Therapist is an 18-month contract position that provides quality treatment services for babies, pre-schoolers (birth-3.5 years), and their primary caregivers seeking counselling and therapy to address various infant mental health concerns. The Infant Mental Health therapist provides clinical and educational support and facilitates responsive referral pathways to treatment services.

Salary range:   $64,573 to $74,875 per annum

  • Conducts infant/parent/caregiver assessments, consultations, and attachment-based treatment utilizing a client-centred, and trauma informed approach.
  • Administers standardized measurement tools.
  • Collaboratively develops treatment plans with clients and regularly evaluates the effectiveness of the treatment plans with clients, and other service providers, and revises plans as needed.
  • Maintains excellent up-to-date clinical records, and client reports in accordance with Agency policies and recording guidelines, including initial assessment, ongoing treatment, end of service and discharge reports. 
  • Functions as “service coordinator” to guide the development and implementation of treatment plans and to ensure that service, including admission and discharge planning, is delivered in a coordinated and timely fashion.
  • Ensures all incidents of a serious nature (e.g. suspected abuse) are immediately reported in accordance with legislative and agency requirements.
  • Participates in intake process as required to facilitate infant mental health treatment or group referrals.
  • Shares in team coverage responsibilities, may supervise and evaluate social work, or psychology students placed with the Agency.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary staff and involves consultation as appropriate to support assessment, treatment planning, and implementation.
  • Facilitates knowledge sharing across departments, supports interagency collaboration, and facilitates client responsive service delivery to ensure timely services to infants and their families.
  • Liaises with and provide consultation around infant mental health issues to external organizations and agencies (i.e., public health, child welfare, medical community).
  • Promotes, establishes, and maintains effective working relationships with diverse communities and community agencies to increase access, coordination, and integration of services.
  • May participate in agency or community task forces, committees, and/or work groups to support the work of the agency.


The following education, professional memberships and knowledge are a requirement for this role:

  • A Master’s level education, or equivalent, in Social Work, Psychology, or Social Sciences
  • 1 year of demonstrated relevant infant mental health experience
  • Must be a registered member in good standing of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Services Workers or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario
  • A valid Ontario driver’s license with regular access to the use of a vehicle. 
  • Knowledge and experience with infant-caregiver dyad assessment, intervention, and treatment
  • Awareness of the role of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and within the community being served by the position.
  • Specific knowledge of and experience with attachment-based interventions, infant-parent/caregiver dyad assessment and treatment, family therapy, attachment theory, group work theory, infant and early childhood developmental theory, complex trauma, disrupted relationships, and dynamics of family violence and sexual/physical abuse, is essential. 
  • An understanding of Anti-Black Racism, anti-oppressive/anti-racism perspective in the context of the social determinants of health when working with clients and their families. 
  • Ability to recognize and identify situations where incidents of and imbalance of power and privilege may occur and can result in possible negative impacts for the client.


While not required, preference will be given to candidates with the following: 

  • 2-3 years of demonstrated relevant infant mental health experience
  • Child welfare experience
  • Functional computer and client information system knowledge.
  • Knowledge of the cultural diversity of communities served by the agency.
  • Fluency in another language(s), including sign language.
