York Hills recognizes the needs of children, youth and families in the 2SLGBTQ communities and as a result is seeking a full-time permanent Child and Family Therapist to join our team working with children, youth and families with a focus on lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (2SLGBTQ) children and youth, inclusive of Black youth, youth of colour and two spirit youth.
About the role
The Child and Family Therapist will provide counselling support to children/youth and families, and will also provide training activities to support service providers to offer respectful, clinically and culturally competent care to lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, 2-Spirit and queer (2SLGBTQ) populations, inclusive of Black youth and youth of colour. The therapist will remain knowledgeable about current research, best practices and clinical and cultural competencies across the life span of 2SLGBTQ populations. The therapist will work independently and as part of the York Hills’ team, and will also collaborate with external organizations to improve access to competent care for 2SLGBTQ populations.
Working as a Child and Family Therapist here’s what you will get to do:
- Manage a caseload of clients and ensure that data entry and written documentation for each file is consistently up to date, including: completing initial client assessment, ongoing recording, and administering assessment tools.
- Provide outreach, youth engagement, and community-based mental health services to 2SLGBTQ youth, inclusive of racialized youth and two-spirit youth in a variety of settings such as the home, at school, or in the community.
- Work collaboratively with children/youth and their families as well as cross-sector service provider partners (i.e., school boards, children’s mental health services providers, other community organizations) in developing individualized and effective, strengths-based, anti-racist/anti oppressive and culturally competent service plans.
- Provide service coordination/case management, liaison, and service planning with involved internal and community resources/partners.
- Develop and facilitate workshops and accessible knowledge exchange activities for children/youth and families, as well as service providers on the topics of mental health, anti-homophobia, anti-transphobia, as well as accessible service provision to, and capacity building for 2SLGBTQ children/youth and families.
- Advocate on behalf of children/youth and families to address gaps in service identified through the work.
- Develop, coordinate and deliver online and in-person training and education sessions, and consultative advice on 2SLGBTQ mental health needs to a wide range of audiences.
- Ensure that all learning initiatives comply with York Hills’ clinical and cultural competency framework as well as best practice and current standards of care, legislative regulations in order to ensure credible evidence-based workshops and other learning activities.
- Participate in working groups and quality improvement initiatives led by external agencies that specifically address access to competent care by 2SLGBTQ populations.
- Participate in advisory committee(s), team-based projects as required to build greater capacity in 2SLGBTQ resources in York Region.
We are looking for an exceptional individual who has:
- Lived experiences of homophobia, transphobia, anti-black racism and personal connection to queer and trans communities are considered assets. Ability to motivate, problem-solve and deal with complex issues with sensitivity and respect.
- Demonstrated ability to provide service in anti-oppressive/anti-racist, child/youth friendly, accessible, culturally competent and community led and based ways that are responsive to the needs of children, youth and families.
- Familiarity with evidenced based/informed treatment modalities including DBT, CBT, SST, SFBT and EFST is an asset.
- Excellent assessment and collaborative intervention skills with children/youth and families.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including two evenings, in order to meet client needs.
- A capacity to build and nurture working relationships with colleagues, referral sources and partner agencies.
- An ability to work independently, as well as within a team structure.
- Above-average oral and written communication skills including report writing, excellent organizational abilities and time management.
- Willingness to travel and provide services throughout York Region (i.e., community hubs, health centres, schools), and an understanding of the geographic, ethno-racial and intersectional diversity of York Regions 2SLGBTQ populations.
- Demonstrated software skills (MS Office, Power point, Excel, Teams and Zoom).
Here is what you will need:
- A Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counselling Psychology (or equivalent) and registration in good standing with an appropriate governing body.
- Professional work experience in children’s mental health, with a focus on community development, with at a minimum of 2 years’ experience in 2SLGBTQ facilitation and training is preferred.
- Must be fluent in English, speaking, writing and reading. Fluency in other languages is an asset.
- Valid driver’s license
