The Role

We are seeking a full-time contract Program Officer that will elevate our current work and strategy in service of our clients. The Programs Team is the client facing hub of Rainbow Railroad, being the first point of contact for case individuals seeking help from over 50 countries around the world. In particular, Rainbow Railroad has been managing a recent increase in requests from Afghanistan.

Rainbow Railroad has ambitious goals, so the right candidate for this role works well under pressure, has experience working compassionately and ethically with marginalized individuals in vulnerable situations, and seeks to find creative efficiencies. The successful candidate will report directly to the Manager of Program Development and work closely with Program Officers.

Key Responsibilities [not inclusive of all tasks required in the role]:

Intake & Case Support Work

  • Serve as the first point of contact for requests for help, communicating directly with at-risk individuals to review, organize, verify, and triage their cases for further management by case-workers, regional team volunteers, and Manager of Program Development;
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of our programming and progress towards our goals within priority areas;
  • Provide essential partnership management support to activists and organizations;
  • Emergency support for navigating failed travel situations out of the various countries;
  • Assist in triaging the increased intake and case support from requests out of Afghanistan

Research and Development

  • Provides support to the Manager of Program Development on research initiatives.

Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 3 years work experience in related governmental/non-profit required, ideally with vulnerable populations through a service delivery position;
  • Degree in fields of Social Work, International Development, Law, or Political Sciences required. Advanced education in Social Work or equivalent professional experience an asset;
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail while being comfortable working in a dynamic, fast paced environment with strict deadlines;
  • Excellent computer skills (Mac environment) and knowledge of software programs required - knowledge of SalesForce an asset;
  • Commitment and support of the LGBTQI+ community in Canada and internationally;
  • Professional experience with programs monitoring and evaluation, specifically quantitative data driven development analysis an asset;
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. As travelling may be necessary, flexibility with working in transit and remotely is an asset;
  • A versatile, skilled and effective communicator required. Demonstrable evidence of strong written communications skills an asset;
  • Lived experience as a refugee or immigrant and/or fluent language skills in Urdu, Persian or Pashto an asset;
  • Based in Toronto is preferable but open to all applicants in Canada.

This role may require some travel internationally - the ability to travel internationally is required.
