Following national trends, students at Western are presenting with mental health issues with increasing frequency and complexity. Residence Counselling offers professional, confidential counselling services free of charge to residence students on a wide range of concerns faced by students. 

 

The Residence Counsellor is a skilled professional accountable for assisting residence students to address emotional, social, behavioural, and developmental concerns within the academic context.  Through the integration of theory and practice, and with sensitivity to individual differences and multicultural issues, this role contributes to the well-being and safety of individual students and the campus community. This role assists students with the challenges of everyday living, promoting positive mental health and optimizing academic functioning by facilitating stress reduction, self-awareness, self-care, emotional regulation, and creative problem solving

 

Qualifications

 

Education:

-   Masters in Social Work and Registered Social Worker

 

Experience:

-   5 years' clinical experience in assessment and treatment of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral problems with adolescents and young adults

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

-   Proven skill in therapeutic practice with adolescents and young adult population, adolescent and adult personality theory, anti-violence work, individual and group psychotherapy
-   Effective listening, observation and facilitation skills to effectively assess clients and provide appropriate consultation
-   Strong mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution skills to respond or assist in emergency situations
-   Strong collaboration skills to manage service delivery in conjunction with case managers, clients and campus mental health practitioners
-   Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations of students
-   Knowledge of the social determinants of health and the social consequences and risk factors associated with mental illness (e.g., substance abuse and addiction, suicide, self-harm, stigma). 
-   Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with the Personal Health Information Protection Act
-   Well-established and demonstrated interpersonal, relationship building, leadership, and oral and written communication skills
-   Strong organizational skills and proven ability to exercise a high level of initiative and independent judgement
-   Demonstrated knowledge of evaluative practice and information management 
-   Commitment to continuous learning and professional development
