Murray McKinnon House Supervisor will have the following areas of responsibility:

  • To model all responsibilities of the Youth Worker role.
  • In conjunction with the Director and/or Assistant Director of Residential Programs, oversee all administrative tasks related to care provision.
  • Assist in the coordination of any research related to the program.
  • Where requested, by the Director of Residential Programs, Assistant Director of Residential Programs, and/or Executive Director, participate in community committees and assist with stakeholder collaboration.
  • Responsible for
    • staffing (e.g., recruitment, hiring, supervising, mentoring, scheduling, assessing performance, training, etc.)
    • acting as a leader/model of agency philosophy and operational direction.
    • proper custody supervision and care of youth while in our care are consistently being provided.
    • ensuring responsive programming is in place to meet the unique needs of our youth.
    • physical plant maintenance.
    • assistance in creating and maintaining strong community partnerships.
    • reporting to the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS) and complying with all annual MCCSS Licensing requirements.
    • providing an inclusive, anti-oppressive, anti-racist environment of physical and psychological safety where staff would feel cared for, supported, understood, respected, and positively challenged.
    • scheduled rotations with On-Call support.
    • upkeep/training of the agency automation system.
    • Works as part of a team under the direction and supervision of the Director of Residential Services, Assistant Director of Residential Programs, Broader Management, and Executive Director and indirectly the Clinical Social Worker(s).  

Credentials:

  • Proof of completed post-secondary education with a specialization in the area related to the position (e.g., Child and Youth Care, Youth Justice, Social Work, Criminology, or related discipline(s)).  Minimal educational credential of a two-year related diploma. Preference is for those with a Bachelor’s Degree.

Experience:

  • At least the equivalent of five (5) years, full-time, prior work experience serving a vulnerable male population – high risk and complex needs such as but not exhaustive: child welfare, youth justice, mental health, addiction, and unsustainable housing.  Preference will be given for those with five (5) plus years.
  • In addition, at least the equivalent of two (2) years, full-time, in an administrator, supervisory, training, and reporting role.  Preference will be given for those with two (2) plus years.

Knowledge and Skill Set

  • Knowledge of trauma-informed, culturally safe, anti-oppressive, and anti-racist practices and a client-centered, relational, strength-based approach to working with young persons grounded in harm reduction principles are vital to this role. Strong Indigenous, Black, and LGBTQ knowledge-based are necessary for the position. Several years of experience and training working with justice-involved youth and families and community partners.
  • Knowledge and experience in overall program development, management, coordination, evaluation and service delivery.
  • Administration and reporting experience.
  • Understanding and competence on theory and principles related to working with a high-risk youth population apply to behaviour management, risk needs responsivity and reintegration.
  • Understanding and competence with group processes and dynamics.
  • Understanding of supervisory/administrative practices (Analysis, evaluation and recommendations), structure and function of the not-for-profit sector.
  • Of organizational behaviour and promoting a positive culture.
  • Of how to build and maintain partnerships with community agencies, partners and stakeholders.
  • Of relevant legislation relevant to a youth justice open detention/custody facility and working within, community resources pertaining to work with youth, and, adherence to policies/procedures of program funders and MMF.
  • Of child/youth development, individual and family dynamics and a wide range of intervention practices.
  • Of time management practices in order to plan their own works schedule, establish priorities and to balance multiple, sometimes conflicting tasks and/or changing priorities.
  • Of team building and motivational strategies.
  • Demonstrated anti-oppression and anti-racism practice and approach.
  • Values, promotes and embraces diversity, equity and inclusion principles and practice.
  • Excellent interpersonal/problem-solving/communication (oral and written) skills and leadership qualities.
  • Function independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Maintain composure, tact and objectivity in challenging or stressful situations.
  • Adhere to confidentiality of sensitive and/or confidential information as required by law or agency direction.
  • Demonstrated presentation skills and computer literacy.
     

Required Documentation:

  • A valid G level driver’s license; with proof of a safe driving record.

  • Provision of Criminal Reference check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
