Chief of Social Work & Attendance Services

Permanent, full-time position

Through its “Ignite Learning” campaign, the Durham District School Board (DDSB) has outlined its strategic priorities, which include: increasing student achievement and well-being; constructively engaging the community; and advancing inspired leadership. This is an exciting opportunity for a Professional Social Worker (MSW) to contribute meaningfully to these priorities.

Reporting to the Superintendent of Education/Inclusive Student Services, and working with a committed team within a school board that employs 7,300 teaching and educational services staff, you will ensure high standards of service delivery to support student achievement and well-being, as well as positive school attendance, and ensure accurate enrolment reporting for students on the register for elementary and secondary schools in the system.

As Chief of Social Work and Attendance Services, you will be strengthened by your collaborative skills and ability to work effectively with various internal and external stakeholders, as you work within a multi-disciplinary leadership team to facilitate the integration of services to students, families and schools. Leadership includes support in areas of focus: effective delivery of service to students and their families, mental health, threat and risk assessment, suicide prevention and intervention, compliance with privacy legislation, and reporting of child abuse and neglect.

Working through cross-sectoral initiatives and Collaborative Agreements with outside agencies, you will also ensure the development and provision of services that address students’ mental health, promote increased awareness and build capacity within the system to identify and effectively address students’ mental health needs.

Your profile as a qualified Chief of Social Work & Attendance Services will include:

  • A Master of Social Work degree.
  • Registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).

  • Experience demonstrating the following:
    • Management skills, including a demonstrated ability to effectively motivate and lead staff; and
    • Creativity and innovation skills regarding approaches to mental health needs of students and families, including school-based approaches to addressing mental health and well-being.
