Counsellor

Seeking a full-time Counsellor to work as part of an interdisciplinary primary health care team and deliver brief, consultation-based counselling services to clients of Chapleau Cree First Nation, Brunswick House First Nation, Chapleau Ojibwe First Nation and Michipicoten First Nation.

Under the direction of the Integrated Care Manager, the Counsellor will provide counselling services to adults, youth, children and families using a strengths-based, trauma-informed approach through one on one, group and/or team based delivery.

Qualifications:

  • A Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW/RSW) or Registered Psychotherapist (RP) preferred, however a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW/RSW) with a minimum of 3-5+ years clinical experience and demonstrated proficiency with a variety of therapeutic intervention and assessment skills may be considered
  • Must be member in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers
  • Three to five years’ work related experience
  • Experience working with youth and young adult populations
  • Certification in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Mindfulness, Harm Reduction, Trauma Informed and Behaviour Modification are assets.
  • Knowledge of multi-service, inter-professional teams and collaborative professional practice
  • Demonstrated experience in relationship and partnership development, networking
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Indigenous history and the impacts on health/mental health
  • Experience working with Indigenous populations
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated competence in conflict resolution and organizational skills
  • Must be self-directed, resourceful and possess critical thinking skills
  • Willing to work flexible hours as required
  • Regular travel between sites/communities is required (agency vehicle is available)
  • Possess a valid driver’s licence, safe driving record as demonstrated in a driver’s abstract and access to a reliable vehicle

Given the traditional practices of Aboriginal people, from time to time exposure to smoke from the burning of sacred medicines such as tobacco, sweet grass, sage or cedar may occur.
