Manager of YWCA Women's Shelter (Contract Position), YWCA Toronto

YWCA Toronto is an association of diverse and caring women dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls through dynamic leadership, advocacy and a range of unique and essential services that promote personal growth and economic independence.

YWCA Toronto Women’s Shelter provides safe and secure emergency shelter for women and their children who are fleeing violence.  The shelter is staffed 24 hours a day and supports 9 families and two single women.  In addition to shelter, families are offered case management support and enriching group and community activities to help them deal with the trauma they have experienced and begin to establish lives that are free of violence.

The Manager of YWCA Women’s Shelter is responsible for the management and overall operation of the YWCA Women’s Shelter. This includes the development, planning, marketing and implementation of the program in accordance with the mission of YWCA Toronto and the needs of the participants. This middle management position is also responsible for contributing to the overall management of the Association.

Reporting to the Director of Shelter and Girls’ and Family Programs, the Manager of YWCA Women’s Shelter’s responsibilities include:

  • Prepares and monitors the budget for the Women’s Shelter in consultation with the Director of Shelter and Girls’ and Family Programs;
  • maintains financial records in accordance with funder requirements and the policies, procedures and practices of the Association;
  • ensures that program facilities conform to the standards set out by funding agreements;
  • ensures that statistical records are maintained and submits a comprehensive annual report on the program with an analysis of trends to identify risks and opportunities;
  • ensures the training, supervision and regular evaluation of all program staff, students and volunteers;
  • plans and monitors the staff work schedule, shares on-call duties and covers for staff absences, when required;
  • ensures the implementation of the Collective Agreement in consultation with the Director of Human Resources and Administration and the Director of Shelter and Girls’ and Family Programs;
  • ensures the promotion of the Access and Equity policies and procedures with staff and program participants;
  • participates with the Director to develop long and short term plans for the programs to meet the identified needs of the participants and the overall organizational objectives;
  • provides consultation to individuals, businesses, government and community groups on the value of the programs;
  • ensures the co-ordination of the operations through staff meetings, case management, and outreach to other service organizations;
  • participates in public speaking opportunities on housing, shelter, violence against women and women's issues, as required;
  • develops and implements annual promotions and publicity campaigns in consultation with the Director of Advocacy and Communications;
  • in collaboration with the Manager of Property Services ensures that program facilities conform to the standards set out by funding agreements and government legislation;
  • responds to concerns and queries from neighbours and the community.

You will have: 

  • Advanced knowledge of concepts and theories of social work, group work and counselling normally acquired through the completion of a graduate degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling or other relevant field;
  • three to five years directly related experience including clinical supervision;
  • ability to understand and interpret legislation that includes the Ontario Human Rights Code, as well as government policies related to shelter management;
  • knowledge of financial and human resource management required as well as previous work in a multicultural, unionized environment;  
  • excellent written and oral communication skills are essential including conflict resolution, crisis intervention/prevention, counselling, and coaching;
  • demonstrated leadership skills including problem solving, organizational, and time management skills;
  • a thorough knowledge of women's services, group work theory and practice and access and equity issues is required;
  • knowledge of current computer applications is necessary (e.g. Windows XP Professional, Office XP Professional, GP Dynamics, E-mail and Internet).

The hours of work for this position are 35 hours per week in accordance with the management hours of work policy.  The salary range for this position is $65,189 to $76,692 per annum (Level M9) plus comprehensive benefits.
