Position Purpose:

As part of a multi-disciplinary team, the Social Worker helps students in their development of a healthy sense of wellbeing and in their ability to maximize their academic achievement. The Social Worker provides direct service to students in elementary and secondary schools to address mental health concerns and will report directly to the Mental Health Lead.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

• Consult with school teams (Administrators, Teachers, Clinical, Attendance Counsellors, Student Support Counsellors, Adolescent Care Workers, and other Support Staff), parent/guardian, and community service providers regarding student mental health and well-being

• Demonstrate responsive practices which reflect multiple cultural and social perspectives and are respectful of diversity

• Foster positive relationships between school, parents and community

• Provide consultation and professional development for school personnel around the Board Mental Health and Well-being Strategy

• Consult and collaborate with school teams and families to initiate and facilitate appropriate referrals to community agencies

• Consult with schools on the assessment of high risk students, including threat assessment and suicide risk assessment

• Provide an intensive level of support and intervention on behalf of high risk students

• Conduct psycho-social assessments to provide better understanding of the issues affecting student mental health and achievement

• Provide individual and group evidence-based interventions to support student mental health

• Provide intervention and support to students, school personnel and parents in the aftermath of a crisis and/or traumatic event

• Maintain progress notes regarding referred students and ensure school board file is up-to-date

• Knowledge and implementation of school board policies, regulations and procedures

• Consult and collaborate with school teams and parents/guardians, and examine patterns of irregular attendance

• Participation in research and evaluation related to student mental health, addictions and well-being

• Perform related professional duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree in Social Work (M.S.W)

• Registered and in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW)

• Minimum of three (3) years related experience in the role of a social worker in an educational, child welfare, medical/psychiatric or related setting

Skills & Knowledge Required:

• Strong analytical, assessment and intervention skills are required

• Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills

• Ability to work independently and as a team member to solve school adjustment, social-emotional and behavioral problems related to mental health of students

• Training and experience in Cognitive and/or Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

• ASIST training an asset

• Understanding of relevant legal and confidentiality issues pertaining to children and adolescents

• Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to a vehicle in order to travel and provide service throughout the district

• Awareness of a tiered approach to mental health supports for children and youth
