Your opportunity:

Using a holistic approach, you will work with an ethno-culturally and academically diverse student population performing an assessment of students' needs related to a variety of physical and cognitive conditions, learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, chronic health, mental health disabilities, and co-morbid conditions.

As part of a dynamic teamand under the guidance of the Team Lead, Disability Consultant, you will work directly with students with disabilities both in-person and/or through the use of technology (i.e. phone, e-mail, Teams) to ensure that appropriate documentation has been received; reviewing and assessing medical documentation/reports to determine interim disability-related accommodations for students; evaluating and adapting accommodations based on students' individual disability-related needs; assisting students in self-monitoring the effectiveness of their accommodations and making referrals to internal and external supports as appropriate. You will also liaise with course instructors and staff, advising on student accommodations issues; and will liaise with an inter-disciplinary team, external service providers, community agencies and other internal resources to ensure effective delivery of accommodations, services and supports.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Applying the established Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) Guidelines on Accessible Education to determine reasonable accommodations
  • Researching and recommending alternative approaches and possible accommodation solutions as part of the duty to accommodate
  • Developing, implementing and monitoring accommodation plans for students based on their learning profile and documentation (e.g. reviewing and interpreting neuropsychological assessments, medical documentation, etc.)
  • Determining the reasonability of an accommodation in relation to a student's disability
  • Screening and making referrals to appropriate resources and services
  • Liaising with course instructors and staff to ensure students receive support requiredfor academic, practicum and/or placement accommodations
  • Assessing and making recommendations on student funding applications and the appropriate disbursement of funds
  • Counselling students on health issues related to their learning and theeffects of their disability

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Occupational Therapy, Social Work, and/or a relevant disability-related field such as rehabilitation services, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of four (4) years of related case management experience working with persons with disabilities, including physical and cognitive conditions, learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, chronic health, mental health disabilities, and co-morbid conditions.
  • Two years of experience assessing disability related needs; developing, implementing support plans
  • Three years of experience dealing with persons in emotional distress, crisis or conflict
  • Demonstrated experience working with a range of medical reports, including but not limited to medical, occupational therapy, audiological, psycho-educational assessments
  • Must have an understanding of disability and social equity issues in an educationalenvironment
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent reading, oral and written communication skills, as well as sound critical thinking and interpersonal skills
  • Must be committed to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion and be able to demonstrate an understanding of the implication of disabilities as they relate to students' success at university
  • Demonstrated understanding of the strengths and challenges of youth and adults withdisabilities and have knowledge of cultural views of disability
  • Ability to exercise initiative, tact, discretion, problem-solving skills and to work under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize knowledge and displaysound judgement, attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy and ability to respond calmly and efficiently in crisis situations
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within an inter-disciplinary team

  • The hours of work for this position are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday from 8:45am-5:00pm, Wednesday from 10:30am-7:00pm, and Friday from 8:45am- 4:45pm.
