To achieve our goal of recruiting and retaining a diverse student body and workforce, we strongly encourage applicants from under-represented and equity-deserving groups, including women, Indigenous peoples, persons from racialized/visible minority groups, persons with disabilities, and persons from sexual and gender minority groups.

Lakehead University has the opportunity for a full time Counsellor in Student Health and Wellness.  As a member of the Counselling team, you will provide professional mental health services, including drop-in counselling, on-going short-term treatment, and groups, in order to support student wellness and academic success. You will assess student needs (including risk assessments) in order to inform provision of care and/or referral, as well as provide mental health services within your regulatory body's scope of practice.

You will collaborate with internal and external health professionals, as well as the university community maintaining compliance with your regulatory body's code of conduct, college standards and practices, and relevant legislation (PHIPA, Regulated Health Professions Act, Health Promotion and Protection Act).

The successful candidate will have a Master’s Degree in Social Work or related discipline and be registered with a regulatory body. The incumbent must have extensive experience with individual counselling (especially single session/solution focused/brief therapy and walk-in counselling), experience developing and facilitating group sessions (psycho-educational and therapeutic), and a working knowledge of relevant legislation (Personal Health Information and Privacy Act, Family and Children's Services Act, etc.).  Preference will be given to applicants with additional Counselling certifications (e.g. Crisis Intervention, Addictions).  Additional qualifications include the ability to practice independently using excellent clinical judgment and knowledge of mental health issues affecting young adults.

The ideal candidate would have lived experience as a member of an equity deserving group.  Experience working in a cross-cultural setting with diverse populations such as international students and refugees, along with an awareness of, and/or training in anti-oppressive practices is preferred.  The ability to work in a second language would be considered an asset.
