Social Worker (BSW), Operational Stress Injury Clinic - Toronto, Ontario

The Operational Stress Injury Clinic is part of a larger network of clinics across Canada and is designed to provide ambulatory services to veterans, members of the Canadian Forces, the RCMP and their families. An operational stress injury is any persistent psychological difficulty resulting from operational duties performed while serving and may include medical conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder [PTSD]. The Operational Stress Injury Clinic is responsible for service provision across a geographic region including Southwestern Ontario, the Greater Toronto area and portions of Central Ontario. The successful candidate will work primarily in the GTA; however, some travel to other satellite locations may be required.

You will provide quality care and work within a comprehensive interdisciplinary team. Knowledge in the areas of assessment and treatment of mental, emotional and behavioural disorders and conditions for those who are referred to the clinic as a result of traumatic stress injuries is essential. A good understanding of military culture would be beneficial.

The role necessitates effective communication and collaboration with Veterans Affairs Canada, Department of National Defence, family physicians, other community partners as well as Operational Stress Injury Social Support [OSISS] partners.

Essential Qualifications

  • Valid registration as a Registered Social Worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers
  • Demonstrated experience in adult psychiatry
  • Knowledge of a Safety Culture in a Health Care Setting in compliance with the OHSA
  • Expertise in the following treatment modalities; individual, marital, couple, family and group counseling and psychotherapy
  • Relevant experience in traumatic stress counseling
  • Demonstrated experience working in a goal oriented, evidence based, outcome oriented practice
  • Strong crisis intervention, advocacy, conflict management and facilitation skills
  • Highly developed interpersonal and problem-solving skills as well as the ability to function effectively independently within an interdisciplinary team setting
  • Excellent organizational, time management and communication
  • Demonstrated skills in providing education to patients, families and the health care team
  • Demonstrated strength in written/verbal communication and case management
  • Knowledge of psychiatric diagnoses and treatments, psychotropic medications and symptom management
  • Strong discharge planning skills
  • Proficient computer skills with a variety of programs
  • Travel within the catchment area is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in French would be an asset
  • Masters Degree in Social Work
  • A demonstrated understanding of the effects of Military and RCMP work
  • Clinical skills and knowledge in child development, children's mental health and family dynamics
  • Comprehensive knowledge and ability to mobilize community health, social and welfare resources in the region, particularly those with relevance to the Veteran Community
  • Supports research and innovation in practice, previous experience in research an asset
  • Familiarity with outcome measurement related to clinical practice, ability to measure and evaluate practice change outcomes

Immunization Requirements

  • Provide vaccination records or proof of immunity against measles, mumps rubella and varicella (chicken pox)
  • Provide documentation of the Tuberculosis skin testing
