School Settlement Response Worker

As a School Settlement Response Worker with the Peel District School Board, you will provide culturally and linguistically specific settlement, referral and counselling support services – in their first language – to students and parents in our schools, to ensure that newcomer families are aware of, and able to access, the full array of community and school services they need. Reporting to the Co-ordinating Principal of International Education, you will assist with parent-teacher interviews, school registration, open houses, school councils and other activities, facilitate or conduct information sessions on health, community services and school-related topics, recommend ways to improve the process, maintain client files, and more.
This highly interactive role will see you working closely with We Welcome the World Centre staff, Peel Board staff, Multicultural Settlement and Education Partnership (MSEP) settlement workers, partnering agencies and other community service providers, to better identify and meet newcomer needs.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
As a School Settlement Response Worker, you will bring to the table two (2) or more years’ experience in settlement work or community work, backed by a post-secondary diploma or degree in Social Work or a related field. In carrying out your duties, you’ll also call upon your:
- Experience in a school environment (an asset)
- Effective interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Effective oral and written English language communication skills
- Fluency in Vietnamese (a priority)
- Fluency in a third language or more (an asset)
- Working knowledge of the education system and community resources in Peel
- Ability to work with a team, and with school personnel in meeting the needs of newcomer students and their families
- Valid driver’s licence
- Demonstrated commitment to working in a diverse school community and/or work environment.
